Living to see
the next sunset
A hobby that got out of hand: around 250 photographs published free on Unsplash, shot mostly while travelling — landscape, street, and architecture.
I publish my photographs on Unsplash, where anyone can download and use them at no cost. There are roughly 250 of them now, taken over several years of travelling with a camera I did not really know how to use yet.
Giving them away was the point. A photograph sitting in a folder does nothing; the same photograph on Unsplash ends up on someone’s article, or a students’ project, or a wall somewhere I will never see. Several of the posts on my own blog use other photographers’ work from the same place, which is how the arrangement is supposed to work.
I am also available for hire if you need something shot specifically.
What I shoot
Four recurring subjects
Streets and squares
Narrow lanes, parked cars, rooftops, people crossing a plaza. Towns photographed at whatever hour I happened to be walking through them.
Mountains and dry country
Arid ranges, rock, salt flats and open plain. The landscapes that do not need good weather to be worth stopping for.
Sunsets
The reason the bio says what it says. Skies going pink and violet over water, cities and roads.
Architecture and interiors
Church interiors, checkerboard floors, altars, facades — the built and decorated things people made to last.
Closer to home
Not everything worth photographing is far away
Most of the photographs people download are the obvious ones — a coastline, a skyline, a sunset. The ones I keep going back to are smaller: a forest floor in Québec, a wet street in the Plateau, the same park in four different seasons.
Travelling taught me to look; living somewhere is what taught me to keep looking after the novelty wore off.
